Description The day that my wife walked out on me, saying she needed to be alone and to have some time to think things over, on the first of July, when the sun beat down on the lake in the centre of the town, when the corn in the meadows that surrounded my house was knee-high, when the first few rockets and firecrackers were let off by over-enthusiastic children to startle us and to speckle the summer sky, I built an igloo out of books in my back yard.
                                                                                                                                           -Neil Gaiman, July Tale

A drawing I made as an (very late, like years later) entry to Neil Gaiman's 'Calendar of Tales' project. Since I was born in July, I predictably chose the July tale, but also because the idea of an igloo made of books is something that feels strangely familiar. I've always used books as a means of escape when things get to be too much in everyday life - surrounding myself in paperbacks and memoirs and obscure facts, like some kind of shelter or fortress. And the idea of an igloo in July resonates well with how I feel like books could transport you to totally different places.

If you haven't yet, read the calendar of tales here, and tell me your favorite tale! :

Thank you so much!  Most of the stories in the Calendar of Tales are super beautiful and poignant, but I especially loved this one because the quiet, flat kind of loneliness that comes with walling yourself in with books just feels really familiar and relatable, haha.

My pleasure . I've never read the Calendar of Tales, but yeah, that's a very relatable feeling. Comforting too sometimes

Aw, thank you! I think the original story itself painted a very vivid 'color' in my head when I was reading it, like the contrast of arctic ice floes and corn meadows
