Description ! Had to do a double take when I signed on and saw 1,800 messages in my inbox. Thank you *majcy92 and ^Anoya for the suggest and DD.

This was taken in a single exposure and, at most, has a curves layer and a saturation decrease. The 1/10 of a second shutter speed let in some nice blur with the rapids, but was fast and steady enough (on a tripod) to get relatively still and sharp Pelicans. I love that you can see the closest Pelican ruffling its wings as a result of just enough motion blur.

I love hearing what people feel and what they have to say in response. So I'm honored by all of your input. If I don't answer your comment, it's because I had nothing to add, or simply because I am blonde and missed it. I do my best to read each one.

Thank you

Edits: dropped saturation, more natural color, bigger size, border removed, new title just cuz.

This is simply stunning. I love how the water looks and the clarity of the pelicans. Just curious, but where did you take this?

Thomas-Koidhis In reply to SarahMaria11 [2011-10-23 22:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you This one is a litttle over-saturated I still find, so I need to edit that. I took this just down the river bank from Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada.

How did you manage to do a long exposure and still keep the shape of the birds so clear and so sharp?? I understand that these waters are fast, but still... Absolutely amazing! I can't breathe...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thomas-Koidhis In reply to diamondshark [2011-07-16 05:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you..

It was a combination of "lucky" things that all kind of fell into place perfectly for the moment. I had my lens mounted to a sturdy tripod and used a cable release for the best sharpness possible. It was also very helpful to be able to set up where I did. Sometimes as you might know pelicans kind of just...hang around lol..I got them at a good moment and the sun was already below the horizon so I got very soft light. And the water IS very fast haha...I don't have the actual numbers, but you would really stop breathing if you knew how much water was flowing per minute! Also, the exposure time was just enough to get a tiny bit of movement/"smoothness" out of the water, but it's actually not moving as much as it looks. Bit of an optical illusion, that worked out in the photo's favor Very happy you like

well, it's all about knowing how to use the opportunity :] That was very interesting, what you've explained! For me it has always been more interesting how one gets to the result than the result itself. There's kind of a story behind every photograph and it makes you look at the picture with different eyes. :]
Of course at first I didn't see the speed you've used, but now I know... Now I can imagine that the water was really fast. :]
Say, I've shared some of your photographs on my Facebook page as I told you earlier. Could I possibly add you comment to the pic, so members could read it, too? I suppose many of them would be interested in the process.

WOW!! this is a freakin AMAZING shot!! GREAT WORK! im soo jelious! what type of camera do you use? and what shutter speed is this taken at?

Thomas-Koidhis In reply to Maikamahi [2011-03-13 14:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Canon 5D Mark II, 1/10th of a second. But you don't need a 5D Mark II to take a picture like this! An entry DSLR could do the trick

Yeh that'll come, just read some photography books basically haha. They'll teach you how to expose manually. The good advice you dont hear often are have fun with it and 'the least important part of photography is the camera.' A guy who had been doing photography for 50 years told me that haha
