Description
My slightly worked on version(not 100% traditional)I blurred some of the background to cover my horrible work, and for a bit of depth.Located in the westernmost point of Oregon and within the Cape Blanco State Park and the lighthouse which was built in 1870, lies an old graveyard.Buried within are some of Port Orford and the surrounding area's founding fathers. The site is just one of the glimpses into the area's past that most have forgotten.
The graveyard is located on a hillside that has slowly been falling into the ocean, and is currently closed to tourism due to the danger of the area. The most curious thing about this site is the large gravestone or marker located at what once was the center of the graveyard. The large stone was dubbed "The Lighthouse Stone" in 1936.During the replacement of the first-order lense of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse,a large storm hit the area. Many in the area reported fantastical stories of sights over the ocean but the most interesting was the account told by James Langlois and James Hughes, who saw a horrific sight over the old graveyard. They told of sounds carried through the winds between the thunder crashes and of something out of the rain as if hiding behind a sheet of blackness.
Soon after the two men were hospilatized and in 1939 the U.S. CoastGuard took over the post.Langlois and Hughes dissapeared without a trace in 1940.
Further research shows that the Lighthouse Stone existed as long as the local Tututni indians can remember. But they say that an "Old God" is buried underneath the stone, and that the erosion of the hillside is the ocean claiming it's child. The Tututni Indians in the area might have had a hand in naming the stone as they say that the marker is truly a "lighthouse that guides travelers from the darkness".In the Tututni language the word for darkness means also "unknown, ocean of the sky".

the style of this illo reminds me of the illos by Harry Clarke in an old Poe collection I have.
