Sometimes when we fail were tempted to beat ourselves up and get really down in the dumps, but that's not true repentance.

St. John Chrysostom said, "The devil makes us bold to sin and then timid to confess, note that order, we ought to fear to sin and be bold to confess." Sin is horrible, we should avoid it with every faculty of our being. Yet when we do sin and fall, we should be bold to rush to God, confessing our sins and receiving His forgiveness and then moving forward choosing to live in a righteous way.

That's all we can do. We cannot go back and change what has been done already so that we can have not sinned back then. We cannot put ourselves in the future where we have many years of overcoming. We can only do what is needed and right today. And if we do that, we will honor God.
