Description ALL MY BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS

I introduce you to Kindling, my new project starting in 2012.

This is a paid comic, what I've been slaving over the last few weeks (and why Macchina has been oh so slow). Kindling will be a weekly webcomic, running concurrently with La Macchina Bellica (fear not, Macchina shall continue!!).

This is the prologue - the first 15 pages to introduce you to the world of Kindling.

Description from the writer:

In the world of Kindling, civilization as we know it perished in a global cataclysm that buried humanity beneath the snows of a generations-long winter. Spring has finally come. Set in the American Southwest, Kindling chronicles a group of survivors as they contend with the dangers of the new world and endeavor to rebuild.

You can check out the homepage at [link] and follow KindlingComic on twitter for updates!

Jason (my fantastic writer) really pushed my limits on Kindling - I had to learn very quickly architecture and backgrounds, which for a very long time was my weakest point in comics. I'm forever grateful for his story, which made me look at my process and my work critically, and strive to improve it.

Thank you! Stay tuned to the site or the KindlingComic twitter (if you're into twitter) - the comic will air in 2012! The writer and I are starting to work on the character designs and chapter one this month :3

Um... your 'o's look like 'u's. It's really off-putting. The art's fantastic, the idea's brilliant, and the title is so resonant and powerful. But you NEED to change that font. It's awful.

If it's just the uppercase O's looking like U's, it's easy enough to fix in Photoshop (I kind of liked the personality of the typewriter - its an IBM Correcting Selectric III from the 1970's)

Either way is fine, it's really only that which is a problem.

It's the nature of the typewriter (i used a typewriter and scanned it). I will pass this on to the writer.

Minaruis [2011-12-17 21:07:51 +0000 UTC]

Honestly...I saw the drawing when you posted it, and I was amazed. I already said, the drawings, the story, and the magnificents connections between the panels, original and beautiful...A really great work !
But the colorization...I don't like it. I imagined it in more sepia tones, and with a darker "ambiance". I wish I had more time, I'll be glad to paint it myself. It's been a long time I didn't made a digital painting, but it'll be an honor to try to offer my version. Maybe, could-I try it on only a few panels ? Would-it bother you ?

God, guy in hat, why aren't you putting that perfectly good scrap lumber on the fire instead of tearing up the irreplacable guide to basic mechanics. HUMANS, I SWEAR

Gorgeous, though. Your colors are an interesting contrast to the bleak content. Though the world doesn't seem 'The Road' levels of dead; I'm guessing there are still seasons, but the ice age is back with a vengeance?

KindlingComic In reply to mesarthim2 [2011-12-21 02:42:29 +0000 UTC]

I'd go with the explanation that the trio doesn't have an ax, so the bigger scraps are hard to get in the fireplace. Plus, they have no idea a new dark age is coming.

The prologue covers the slip of the world into the generations-long winter. El Largo Invierno, The Long Winter. Seasons, at least in higher latitude climates, probably did disappear entirely for a while. You can see the beginnings of snow falling on Miami on page 10.

Chapter One picks up as spring finally returns however. The world of Kindling isn't dying but full of returning life and potential. Survival is much less "the Road" and more "Island of the Blue Dolphins" or "Swiss Family Robinson." Less running from cannibals (though still some), and more building sweet forts out of the old world's detritus.

Both wholly reasonable. And good, good; it's the aftermath of these things that's always the most interesting parts! (I have, for ten years, been seeing people refer to every post-apocalyptic media thing as either being 'the future we'll definitely have in two years,' sometimes with 'except less cheerful'.)

Looking forward to the rest of the comic!

The scrap lumber is covered in snow and ice, and thus would not be good on the fire (as it is wet).

The meteor strikes caused forest fires in siberia. The smoke from that as well as the dust kicked up from the impact caused a winter, which in turn caused global cooling - at least that is my "I watch too many documentaries" take on it :3
