Description Are you ready, kids? Aye-aye, Captain. I can't hear you! AYE-AYE, CAPTAIN! Oh...! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

SpongeBob SquarePants!

25 years ago today, Nickelodeon's greatest cartoon ever first aired on TV before officially premiering in two months! The show that practically everybody knows and loves revolves around our absorbent, porous, and yellow sea sponge shaped like a kitchen sponge, wearing square pants. He lives in a pineapple under the sea, loves to blow bubbles, catch jellyfish like butterfly hunting, works as a fry cook at the local fast-food eatery, the Krusty Krab, flipping Krabby Patties, karate, and playing with his friends. His never-ending good nature and childlike enthusiasm can make often make him a nuisance to others (some we all know too well), but his refreshing attitude makes him a likeable underdog. Despite his positive traits, "SpongeBob excitement" usually means "SpongeBob disasters," as he would naively if not cause some situation, no matter how big or small it be. And of course, we all know what he says when he's confident - "I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready!" living in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom - which is located by Bikini Atoll - SpongeBob is surrounded by an ensemble of characters, both good and bad. This includes his pet snail, Gary; his best friend, Patrick Star, a dimwitted sea star who lives under a rock two houses away from SpongeBob and would usually join him on his adventures; his Squidward Tentacles the octopus vehemently despises him and Patrick due to their childishness loves making self-portraits of himself, dancing, and playing the clarinet, despite his lack of talent; Sandy Cheeks, a thrill-seeking squirrel from Texas who lives in a tree enclosed in an airtight glass dome; Mr. (Eugene H.) Krabs the crab, obviously, is the greedy proprietor of the Krusty Krab, and therefore, SpongeBob and Squidward's boss and father of a teenage sperm whale, Pearl; Mrs. Puff the puffer fish who is SpongeBob's driving instructor at her boating school, unfortunately for the both of them, SpongeBob always fails his driving exam; Then, there is Plankton the, well, plankton (copepod actually) who owns the unsuccessful fast-food restaurant across from the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket, and he plots to steal the secret formula for Krabby Patties but is always thwarted; There is the unseen French Narrator who often introduces episodes and narrates the intertitles as if the series were a nature documentary about the ocean, and a menagerie of other characters SpongeBob interacts with, whether they be friend or foe. Larry the lobster who is a bodybuilder and lifeguard, retired superheroes, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, the pirate ghost known as the Flying Dutchman who steals the souls of others, and the god of the sea, King Neptune. The townspeople serve as the background characters, though there are some who stand out, like a fish named Fred who famously cries out, "MY LEG!" whenever something happens to his leg. And finally, there's Patchy the pirate, who is the live-action president of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club and would often host specials with his marionette parrot, Potty.

SpongeBob SquarePants has become one of the best cartoons in history hands down, receiving worldwide critical acclaim and has gained popularity since its second season. And to think it started off as an unpublished educational comic book created by marine science educator and animator, Stephen Hillenburg, in 1989 called The Intertidal Zone to teach his students about undersea life. It originally premiered on Nickelodeon as a sneak peek after the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999, and officially premiered on July 17, 1999. Unlike the other cartoons I made anniversary projects for, SpongeBob is still running, consisting of a total of fourteen seasons, with a fifteenth season on the way. It also has three feature films - The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Sponge Out of Water (2015), and Sponge on the Run (2020) - and two spinoffs - Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show (2021). SpongeBob SquarePants has won a variety of awards including six Annie Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, four Emmy Awards, two BAFTA Children's Awards, and a record-breaking twenty Kids' Choice Awards. A Broadway musical based on it opened in 2017 to critical acclaim. The series is also noted as a cultural touchstone of Generation Z. And of course, SpongeBob has left behind a tremendous legacy in its wake. Our yellow sea sponge has shown up on everything from movie posters to even boxer shorts. From internet memes to fashion trends in even Cairo, Egypt, to naming new species of marine life after SpongeBob characters, such as a new species of mushroom named Spongiforma squarepantsii after the titular sponge himself, a species of abyssal sea star called  Astrolirus patricki, described and named after Patrick Star, and finally a species of sea sponge, Clathria hillenburgi, was named in honor of Hillenburg, also referencing his creation of the series itself.

To me, SpongeBob SquarePants has left its mark on my life as much as Ed, Edd n Eddy. This awesome cartoon centering marine animals, with a sea sponge of all species as the star, filled with slapstick comedy, charm, memorable characters, unforgettable moments, songs, celebrity guest appearances, and more importantly, incredibly outstanding animation caught my attention after I saw it when my family and I got cable. I was definitely invested in the show before and after its first movie, purchasing books and magazines, and playing video games. And talking of its games, I currently have Creature From the Krusty Krab, The Cosmic Shake, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, and my first and foremost favorite SS video game ever, Battle for Bikini Bottom (both the original and the Rehydrated versions). The cartoon may not have been as immersive as Ed, Edd n Eddy, but it's still one of the best cartoons I've ever enjoyed. And although its running time is starting to get dull on me, at the same time I'm glad it's still running. Just think, if the series did end after its first movie (just two years after we got cable and I got to see SpongeBob), I would've been disappointed. I am truly blessed to have seen SpongeBob and I'll remain an unwavering fan of his series for all time.

This is my SpongeBob fanart made on Photoshop! Since I made my 25th Anniversary of Ed Edd n Eddy  pic, obviously I would do the same for SpongeBob, and that goes for CatDog and Angry Beavers. Like EENE, I would make SpongeBob fanart back in my youth, though it was primarily during my middle school and early high school years, especially since the premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, when I had a thrill making a ton of fanart, including a sequel and a crossover of the movie featuring the Eds, Angela Anaconda, Yakkity Yak, and Brandy and Mr. Whiskers. So, this pic would be a huge milestone.

I thought about making a vector of our porous sea sponge in the style of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for some time, but since I made my EENE 25th anniversary submission, I decided to go in the new non-MLP art direction. As with my other non-MLP pics, this was going to be a new challenge to take on willingly, and in spite of my other projects, I would no doubt make this pic. The first thing I did was make the backdrop. There's no way I can match the oil painting backgrounds, so I made the sky instead with the Hawaiian flower clouds. I wish I had more shots of the sky and its flowers, but it looks like the ones I chose work just fine. The bubbles I made are based on the bubbles that serve as scene transitions in the episode. I should be lucky I found the SpongeBob font, Krabby Patty. Initially, I was going to use the font for the "25 Years of," but then just as I used a quarter for EENE's 25th anniversary pic, I used bubbles for that instead. I used the Chewy Bubble font and applied a gradient with the same colors seen in the bubbles SpongeBob blows. I could've done better with that, but it seems to work, nonetheless.

And of course, SpongeBob would be the only character in this pic since he IS the star of the series. Since this was my first digital fanart attempt, and with my busy schedule, I wouldn't be able to include everybody else if I wanted to. When working on SpongeBob's vector, I had an idea of drawing him in the style of season 3. Most SpongeBob fans prefer to see the first movie as the series finale. Plus, I wanted to narrow my searches for screenshot templates, and I enjoy season 3 SpongeBob's design. When I perused through season 3, I quicky came across the posture I needed in the "Idiot Box" episode, with SpongeBob's arms and legs spread out with excitement when he and Patrick would get their box to play in. However, I used a render of him for the bulk of the vector, and then once I traced it, I changed the angle of his arms, added new legs, and made his mouth wider. The color scheme chosen was from season 14. I was initially going to give him his bubble wand, which would account for the bubble greeting overhead, but I decided to turn down that idea since it wasn't necessary. In the end, he turned out perfectly.

I would like to point out that even though today is supposed to be SpongeBob's 25th anniversary, the series didn't officially premiere until July 17th. So, I'll see what I can do by then. Maybe I'll make SpongeBob's MLP:FIM vector and another 25th anniversary pic with him in the style of said show. Or maybe something else. Until then! Here's to SpongeBob SquarePants! IT'S THE BEST DAY EVER!

Happy 25th Anniversary, SpongeBob! Thanks for 25 years of dropping on the deck and flopping like a fish.  And rest in peace, Stephen Hillenburg. Thank you for combining my love for animals with animation in this legendary cartoon.
