Description
Ok, so this is it. The scan isn't always the best. I originally submitted this to a Facebook group, but thought some of you here may like it.
I'd like to thank those who inspired me to try something like this, on the Facebook group Road-Geekery. Nathan Bush and Kenneth Simmons (and even Jacob Mattison), and anyone I missed (please accept my apologies)
Bare in mind this is an alternate timeline than actual history, and as far as this pic is concerned, a whole massive archipelago was raised in the Pacific ocean. The central islands mostly belong to Ai'a'ivea, a federal state, at the federal level ruled by Lusi Le Lagi Tiamane Ai'a'ive, who has several titles, the Matriarch, Le Tina, Le Masiofo (that's Ai'a'ive/Samoan for "Queen", please note the s and f are reversed from the word for "member of a certain crime organization") The "inner" islands is partly owned by Ai'a'ivea, but much of it was given to other countries as "gift islands." In many cases, existing countries nearby have been given islands. Beyond that you have the Outer Islands, and beyond that, the Ring Islands (and on them, you have the Ring Roads and the Ring Rails)
In this picture, you have Ai'a'ivea's M-45, the M stands for "Matriarch" in English, and "Masiofo" in Ai'a'ive (but many expats from the USA will often call these roads "Interstates") They are federally funded, and mostly follow certain standards (but there's several exceptions in this picture alone!) The shield has a traditional Matriarch's crown atop it. Some M roads have special emblems, but not this one. Yes, like Quebec, the "exit number on a yellow directional sign" is a thing.
Now, here, a chain of new islands has formed between the isolated attols of Tokelau. These islands were "gifted." And then Tokelau ended up switching, before (and in our timeline) it was a mostly independent territory of New Zealand. It ended up switching to be a mostly independent territory of Ai'a'ivea. And they use the Ai'a'ivean dollar. Railroads and certain roads are owned or regulated by Ai'a'ivea. It's also Ai'a'ivea that provides military protection. HOWEVER, you go through Customs and Immigration to enter Tokelau, or to go to "real" Ai'a'ivea.
Ok, lets take things apart from the bottom. As Tokelau is a "lefty" country, that's the side of the road you'll have to be on. There's a section for buses to be checked, before the bridge. It crosses into the state* of Motu-Masina (Moon Islands), Ai'a'ivea. From a short distance from the bottom of this map, until some distance beyond the top, you're on a part of the M-45 that actually is the Matriarch's....well, it's owned by the federal government.
*Unlike the USA, and like Russia, Ai'a'ivea is an "asymmetric" federation, the many different "states" being different, sometimes in different ways, and sometimes having different levels of autonomy.
Once through customs and immigration, over the bridge, there's an exit on the left to the Wrong Way Inn (formerly the Donatello Rotel ("Rotel" being a motel that's also at or near a railroad station)), the Wrong Way Inn also has restaurants, train station access, and a few stores, it's like a small shopping center. Speaking of things to buy, the other side of the road has duty free, for those driving to Tokelau. North of the Wrong Way Inn, and the duty free, there's a one-way road, Mele/Honey. If you remain on the M-45, you'll certainly notice you're coming to a diverging diamond. Or actually, the end of it. O contrario to most M roads, there's a place with TRAFFIC LIGHTS! And a warning sign that there's a crossover. Beyond this, you drive on the right. While not shown here due to lack of space, I can give you a link...to what a speed limit sign would look like in Ai'a'ivea.... www.deviantart.com/.../Traffic…... it's the top two of the rightmost post, a rectangular M.P.H. sign is always above a red ring Km/h sign. So whatever you feel more comfortable with for the speed limit, you'll understand (if you believe in using a totally out there unit of measurement nobody's ever heard of, or something really archaic...NOBODY would measure speed in chains per hour, but chains were something, still used in the UK for subdividing a mile on train tracks...then sorry, you're out of luck) Also, some of the signs that are just shown in English here are actually in both English and Ai'a'ive (or Tokelaun, or even tri-lingual, in the area around this bridge)
Also of interest, immediately after that half-diamond divergence (do you have a better term?) you go over train tracks that are jointly owned, and also have a branch off to Tokelau, generally run parallel to the M-45.
Any comments? Any questions?
Oh, and WillM3luvTrains you were probably wondering what the emblem for a very major highway looks like in Ai'a'ivea. Wonder no more!
